SSC CGL Tier 1 Preparation Strategy (30 Days) Quantitative Ability

SSC CGL Tier 1 Preparation Strategy (30 Days)

Quantitative Ability
1. Check where you stand.
Although most of us are reluctant to do this but it is very important to know where “I” stand in the beginning of preparation. It will greatly help you to gauge your improvement during the course of preparation.
Here is what you need to do.
  • With alarm set for 45 minutes, give CGL Tier 1 Maths Section.
  • Give your best attempt thinking it is your actual exam.
  • Then make use of your already made analysis and mark the questions you were able to do and which you could not do. This will give you the actual difficulty level of each question.
  • Analyse its solution thoroughly as these days SSC doesn’t give any new questions. So chances are there that questions will be repeated with only change in values.

2. Learn
Now you are actually ready to start the main stage i.e. preparation. Assuming you are preparing other subjects as well.
It is always important to complete at least 2-3 books to ensure that no topic is missed.
So let’s see how time can be managed to do it:
  • First thing is to brush up or strengthen your fundamental mathematical concepts.

  • For this you can refer these concept building books. Quantum CAT is also under Practice Book .
  • Complete these books in 20-25 days. You have Question Analysis with you, so you should prepare from the books according to it.
    • To make your basics stronger in Advanced & Arithmetic Maths.
      • First finish the Basics from RD Sharma Book for Class 9th &  10th. After finishing RD Sharma, start Quantum Cat (Theory, Examples & Level 1 Questions). Once you sincerely finish RD Sharma & Quantum Cat Book, you will be well versed in concepts and basics of Advanced & Arithmetic Maths. Now you can refer next step.
    • If your basics are strong but you lack speed, short tricks or doesn’t feel comfortable in some particular topics then you must refer Practice Books.

  • You can start right from Quantum CAT book (Theory, Examples & Level 1 Question). After finishing it, you will know better ways to solve the problems. Now you need to practise. Start from M Tyra Quicker Maths, it has variety of questions in Arithmetic Maths(Don’t mug up all the formulas it have, try to solve them with your learning). Once you finish M Tyra, start either with Lucent’s Higher Maths or Kiran’s Advance Maths and finish these books in set time frame of  days.

  • Like if you see a topic in book from which there was not even a single question in last 2 years, it is very less probable that you will get it this time. If it is very difficult, you may leave the entire topic. (Like Banker’s Discount & True Discount)
  • But if it is doable and doesn’t need much efforts, you can read it anyway, or you can mark it to do at some later stage.
  • Topics having more questions should be practiced more, even if you find the topic/questions on the topic to be easy.
  • In short, book should be prepared in accordance with the Question Analysis only and not the other way round.
Now after preparing the mentioned books completely, you would have covered almost 100% of the syllabus. Further detailed preparation should be as follows:
  • After covering the first practice book (Quantum CAT), give a mock test with a clock set for 110 minutes and for Maths Section it must be 45 minutes.
  • Make sure the mock test is based on the latest pattern.
  • Give one or 2 more mock tests and analyse the improvement in your performance.
  • You will surely encounter questions from some topics which are not there in your analysis and nor covered in your first book. Note them down (your diary of mistakes is the key to your success in Exam).
  • Now start preparing from the second & Third practice book (M Tyra, Lucent Higher Maths or Kiran Advanced Maths), so that uncovered topics can be prepared. Also already covered topics will be revised.
  • It may also happen that you get different and better method for some questions in second & third book.
  • Change the method of doing a question only if you are more comfortable with the new one, no need to switch if the new method is 1 or 2 seconds faster.
  • Along with starting the second & third book, you must start giving mock tests regularly.
  • At this point in time, 2-3 mock tests per week would be enough to get you going.
  • Complete the second & third book in 20-25 days.
After completing second & third book, you should have covered almost 100% of Maths syllabus.
4. Practice and Learn
Last 15-20 days are very crucial and should be used wisely to ensure a high score in exam.
  • Maths is a subject in which the score is more influenced by practice than by knowledge.
  • So make sure you practice each and every type of question and that too under the pressure of solving it fast. Mock tests serve as the best source of doing this.
  • Your target should be to practice more and more Mock tests to ensure you become familiar with the pattern and pressure of the exam.
  • If you encounter any new question, make sure to look for its best solution and jot it down.
  • Do it till one week before exam.
5. Final stage
  • By now (1 week before paper) you should have read almost everything for the exam and you are ready for the final show. But just before the D-day, you need to test all your knowledge and resources (tricks and Formula) at hand. For that we suggest you to give at least 3 mock tests in the last week.
  • You should give it in the exact same environment like you are going to do in the final Exam. That is, give mock test in 10 am-12 noon Slot. It will give you the much required confidence that you can do it without getting exhausted. In between you can skip 2 days to have a healthy break (during this week you should revise whatever you have learnt in past 60 days)
Topper’s Speak
How to give Mock/Previous Year tests:
 > Try to score 44+ consistently
> The most important thing is you should have a similar environment like that while giving the actual paper.
 > Sit in a quiet place and then start the paper.
 > Give them completely in one go. Don’t do it in bits and pieces.
 > Set a timer for 45 minutes for Maths (this is actually what you get to solve the questions).
 > One of the topper told, he used to spend 2 hours in analyzing the paper. This is what you should also do.
 > Analyse each and every question of Maths, to check for the better methods from the solution of the paper. You should adopt the new method only if you feel it is necessary.
Make a target for yourself in paper and keep it increasing with the improvement in score of Mock Tests.
Addition : When you solve question, try to do most of the calculation in mind. This will save time and your dependency on rough space will be reduced.
We are always there to help you guys. After all, Sharing is Caring.
